QueerTrans Research

Summary

This project consisted of a logo, an Instagram template, and a video for the Queer and Trans Community College Student Oral History Project. This program aims to amplify voices of queer students in community colleges through oral video projects. Originally, the program lacked branding, and the client struggled to promote the program and draw people to the program’s site. They also needed one of their video interviews edited. Using Adobe Illustrator, I designed a logo utilizing LGBTQ+ symbolism to efficiently convey the program’s message as well as designed templates that the client could use to consistently promote the site’s content on Instagram. Furthermore, I utilized Final Cut Pro to edit the client’s raw interview footage to create a polished, organized video to serve as an introduction to the program.

The Problem

Who: QueerTrans Stories
What: Logo, social media template, promotional flyer, video editing
How: Adobe Illustrator, Final Cut Pro

Why: The client had previously worked with Flagship Design Studio and wanted more work on their project. They were having trouble promoting their program. Furthermore, they needed help editing a video.

Phase I: Research

Because this client had previously worked with Flagship Design Studio, we were able to gather information from the art director about the client and program. From there, we developed interview questions for the client.

Phase 2: Logo Design

To start off with brainstorming for the logo, I looked at LGBT and educational symbolism, as those were the two most prominent parts of the client’s project. I sketched out some ideas of different conepts.

Taking my personal favorite ideas, I digitized the logos. The client was also still figuring out the name of the program at the time.

After feedback from teammates and the art director, I decided to lean into one of the most obvious LGBT symbols—the “+” sign. The client had also decided on the name “QueerTrans Research”.

Phase 3: Social Media Template

I designed social media templates for the client to use to promote their program on Instagram. In designing the templates, I wanted to create variations for the client to choose from depending on what type of information they want to put in the particular post.

Phase 4: Video Edit

Finally, I created a video edit for the client. They wanted to me to edit their video of an interview with queer students where they talk about queer joy. The client wanted labels to identify the students as well as audio adjustments to equalize the students’ voices and remove background noise. They also asked me to organize the video to allow for easy navigation.
